You must always validate your train ticket by stamping it in the yellow machines provided on platforms and station concourses. The inspectors can be very hard on anyone travelling without valid tickets, and if you can't find a machine that works, or a member of staff who can help, write the date, time and location on the ticket yourself. The large ticket machines have a slot where you can validate your ticket as soon as you collect it.
Departures and arrivals are often given equal priority on display boards: partenze means departures and arrivi means arrivals. As well as their final destination Italian trains are identified by a number which will be on your ticket.
Binario means platform and trains usually have a regular platform listed on the timetables displayed at stations. But this can change so check the display boards and listen for announcements.
